Andreas Charalambous, AIA, IIDA was born in London, UK of Greek/Cypriot parents, grew up on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus and began his artistic career with early watercolors that explored his surroundings on the island. He went on to study architecture under a Fulbright scholarship at Cornell University, where he also studied art and photography. In his professional life Andreas has continued to follow the dual creative paths of Art and Architecture. As an artist his formal training and continuing practice of architecture has brought a studied order and balance to his painting.
Whether depicting sculpture that comes alive through his photographic lens, or Mediterranean still lives that betray his childhood memories, his work expresses ordered yet romantic views. Through the masterful interplay of light color and texture, his work exudes a dreamlike serenity. His paintings and photographs are in private and public collections in Europe and North America.
In his architectural practice, Andreas has capitalized on his artistic background to create warm, simple, modern spaces that are not of a specific style or time, but reflective of a studied observation and understanding of the project, client and place. As in a painting, a FORMA Design project can be distilled to basic principles or concepts that guide and shape the design. Material, form and order are invoked and composed in thoughtful service to a strong underlying concept.
Building on the artistic and architectural background of Charalambous, FORMA takes on a wide range of design commissions, from Architecture and Interior Design for residential and commercial spaces to Graphics and Branding for corporations and individuals, from custom furniture and lighting to Marketing campaigns, Advertising and Environ-mental Graphics.
FORMA’s studio-based strategy has allowed it to remain client-focused and design-driven while achieving a fifteen-year track record of success including numerous awards and media recognition. Awards include, among others, several International Interior Design Association (IIDA) Awards, back-to-back National Healthcare Awards, numerous American Institute of Architects (AIA) awards from the Potomac Valley, the Washington/DC and the Northern Virginia Chapters, an American Advertising Award (ADDY) for Sales Promotion and a Design Excellence Award from Fairfax County.
