But there is also a need for functional products – something that will stand the test of time while providing comfort. Fortunately for consumers, there is one designer who has been producing this theme within the home furnishing category. His name is Hans Hopfer.
Hans Hopfer began his career in 1964 when he joined the growing company Mabiliar-Basar in Nuremberg at Fleeischbrücke. Part of his contract with Mabiliar-Basar stated Hopfer would only design and develop products under his own name. Therefore, the brand name Hans Hopfer was born.

During Hans Hopfer's first year as a designer with Mabiliar-Basar, he started developing his line and concepts. Hopfer knew he wanted to produce a clean, modern, and streamlined variety of products that would also be useful and comfortable. He wanted to design a line for longevity.
Hans Hopfer's first release under his self-titled brand name was the Bausystem in 1965. The Bausystem was a sofa-bed providing a flat seating when the bed was stored. To enhance Hopfer's goal of a streamlined appearance, the design contained no seams or gaps. This design set the stage for what was to come.
The next product Hopfer released was the Mobiliante. This 1967 release was the first sofa collection offering a sofa, love seat as well as ottoman. Customers were able to purchase one or all three. Keeping with Hopfer's vision, the final construction contained minimal details while providing comfort for the modern consumer.
In 1969, Hopfer took a chance when he named his next product “The Player.” When asked why he named this item with such a risqué tag, he explained this piece could be expanded to satisfy the needs of even the biggest player. The product itself was a sofa that had additional pieces that transform the sofa into a large lounge – large enough to hold several people side by side.
Also in 1969, Hopfer released “The Lounge.” This was a 3-piece matching collection providing extra room for the consumer to fully relax. The main consumers of this piece were individuals needing to substitute a bed for a sofa due to lack of room within their home.
After the release of The Lounge, Hopfer took a much needed break. It is believed that during this time, his life changed dramatically with the birth of his daughter Patricia. According to co-workers and friends, Hans Hopfer decided consumers needed a family-friendly product that could still be considered a work of art. It has been said the birth of his daughter was the reason Hopfer decided to adjust his product line. Hopfer returned to his designs in 1971 with his next release – which was a new twist to his collection.

“The Depot”, which was the first storage system released by Hans Hopfer, gave a new spin to the brand name. Consisting of a variety of matching pieces, The Depot gave consumers the opportunity to organize their home with a modern shelving system.
Since this release, Hans Hopfer has created countless pieces for his brand and has gained fans from around the world. But no matter what is does, Hopfer still stays true to his original idea – to create a collection providing a simple, clean, modern and streamlined appearance.
Recently, his daughter Patricia joined him at Mobilia to begin work on her own brand. However, there is one thing they both share, that is the passion of simple yet efficient designing.
The variety of products Hans Hopfer has released to the world can only get better. Regardless of what theme is popular in years to come, the theme Hopfer offers will stay in style for years to come. Consumers are focusing more on family-friendly items and less on the frills of highly decorative items – and this is exactly what a person can expect from Hans Hopfer. He has a style that will never grow old.
