Starck Collaborations Keep Modern Design Fresh... and Well Stocked!

Philippe Starck is like a 21st century da Vinci. Not only is the designer constantly turning out new products, his creations span a vast array of industries, including furniture, fashion, boats, and even computer hardware. Among Starck’s most recent releases is his latest edition of watches in collaboration with timepiece giant Fossil. “Palindrome Too” is an updated version of a previous Starck-Fossil design. The watch thwarts the traditions of analogue time-keeping by splitting hour and minute hands into two separate dials. At first glance, it’s a bit of a mind twist for those of us trained to read classic watches. However, the innovative system might actually be easier from young children just learning. That is, if the watch had numbers on it… The watch is comprised of a polyurethane strap and stainless steel face. The design and color palette of the Palindrome Too makes the watch a decent compliment to Starck’s fashion marriage with Italian cashmere company Ballantyne. The collection, which began selling in the fall of 2009, features pieces for men and women crafted from high-tech fabrics like cashmere that repels water. The fabric is patented as “wet-out” cashmere and allows the luxurious, but traditionally delicate fabric to be used as a versatile outerwear option. Materials and garments for the collection were exclusively developed at the Ballantyne workshop in Scotland. Starck chose to work with the company “because of their ancestral know-how, their strong expertise in cashmere and the Scottish roots of the company.”
