On The Ball Seating

In 1962, Finnish designer Eero Aarnio revolutionized the whole idea of seating with his iconic Ball Chair, the first-ever seat that ensconced the sitter inside a ball.  Now, German office furniture house Topstar is taking the concept of ball as chair to the next level with the Sitness 5, a chair/stool that is essentially a ball you can sit on, rather than in.  Inspired by those giant exercise balls you often spot in "playful," "worker friendly" offices all over the world, these unusual seats could become the next must-have piece in modern homes and offices.

Technically, the Sitness 5 stool (see?  even the name is playful! and fun!)  is actually made from one of those exercise balls, and even comes with an air pump to allow the sitter to regulate just how "pumped up" their ball is.  The ball is perched atop five chromed legs, and it's covered in a textured polyester described by the manufacturers as a "modern 3-d mesh fabric."  We're not quite sure what that means, but they are in Germany, after all.  The resulting stool/chair thingy is undeniably adorable.  It looks kind of like a gumdrop, but we think it resembles a friendly cartoon space alien.  Of course it comes in plenty of fun colors, including tangerine orange, lime green, petal pink, tomato red, sky blue, royal blue and bright yellow, along with basic black and white.
